Your Guide to Translating Road Nicknames to Their Official Numbers

When driving in Miami, you should know that Miami roads and highways have nicknames as well as numbers, and Miamians use these names frequently. Did you know that US 1 has three different names in different parts of the city? And if a local tells you to take “the Palmetto,” would you know to follow the signs for “826?” Your complete road name translation guide is provided here.

Major Roads and Highways

  • Airport Expressway is 112 – runs East to West.
  • Biscayne Boulevard is US 1 – North of Downtown Miami.
  • Brickell Avenue is US 1 – in Downtown Miami and Brickell.
  • Collins Avenue is A1A – runs South to North in Miami Beach.
  • Dolphin Expressway is 836 – connects with I-395 in the East, and 826 and Florida’s Turnpike in the West.
  • Don Shula Expressway is 874 – connects from 826 after SW 40 Street.
  • Florida’s Turnpike is 821 – Western loop around the city.
  • JFK Causeway is 934 – Northernmost link from Miami Beach to the mainland.
  • Julia Tuttle Causeway is I-195 – links Miami Beach to the mainland.
  • MacArthur Causeway is I-395 – Southernmost link from Miami Beach to the mainland.
  • Palmetto Expressway is 826 – it turns into 163rd Street in North Miami Beach.
  • Snapper Creek Expressway is 878 – a short east-west freeway from 874 in Kendall to US 1 in South Miami.
  • South Dixie Highway is US 1 – South of Downtown Miami.

  • Bird Road is SW 40 Street
  • Calle Ocho is SW 8 Street – in Little Havana
  • Tamiami Trail is SW 8 Street – in the West part of the city
  • Coral Way is SW 22 Street
  • LeJeune Road is SW 42 Avenue
  • Kendall Drive is SW 88 Street or State Road 94
  • Red Road is SW 57 Avenue
