About Tropical Park
Tropical Park was developed in 1979 on the site of a former horse track. It is a very popular park, attracting about 1 million visitors every year. Joggers and cyclists appreciate the paved pathways circulating through the 275-acre park. The park also has fields for softball, soccer and football as well as places to play basketball and volleyball.
Tropical Park also has four separate lakes and a beach, making it an inviting destination for paddle boating, sunbathing, swimming and freshwater fishing. The fishing lake is stocked with large-mouthed bass, bluegill, catfish and more, and hosts frequent fishing contests. Unfortunately, swimming is not permitted in these lakes.
Tropical Stadium is also home to the nationally recognized Miami-Dade Track and Field Team. The stadium has hosted prestigious national track and field meets such as the Junior Olympics and USA National Track and Field Championships. A walking club has also been created for visitors of all ages.
Tropical Park houses 12 lighted, wheelchair-accessible tennis courts. Racquetball facilities are also available. Lessons are offered. Reservations are accepted. Call 305-225-6006 for more information.
The new 2-acre dog park is divided into two areas, one for larger dogs weighing over 35 pounds and one for smaller dogs weighing less than 35 pounds. Both areas feature play equipment, such as a tire jump, window jump, king-of-the-hill ramp, dog walk and others. The dog park also features dog comfort stations with doggy drinking fountains and water sprays, pooper scoopers to keep the areas clean, and a shade structure that overlaps both sides.
The park includes a new promenade overlooking the lake, park benches along the promenade, new shade and flowering trees throughout, and a common area for dog owners with water fountains and an informational kiosk. A walkway connects all areas of the dog park and makes it ADA accessible.
The Equestrian Center at Tropical Park hosts more than 36 horse shows each year. Registered Arabians, hunter/jumpers, Western style, Paso Finos, and other breeds come to strut their stuff and pick up valuable show ribbons and trophies. The center also hosts full-size rodeos, bringing in portable bleachers for up to 5,000 spectators.
The center features two clay show rings, one for performance and one for warm-ups. It also has two grass courses, plus seating for approximately 1,000 persons. At the heart of the equestrian facility is a promenade and a state-of-the-art show arena covered by a steel roof. This full-service facility, has 267 stalls available for rent to competitors, recreational vehicle hookups, restroom facilities and concession stands.
Amateur Boxing Program
Started in 1978, the Miami-Dade Parks Amateur Boxing Program is offered to participants age 10 and up. Over 13,000 members have registered, and there is a Women in Boxing Program offered as well. The Tropical Park Demos Boxing Center is one program location, and the 27th Avenue Boxing Center is the other. Both facilities are fully staffed and equipped to teach the fundamentals of amateur boxing. Each center has qualified coaches and equipment to satisfy all amateur participants.
